    Opening Night Gala

Friday Sep 21, at 6:00 pm at The Seawell Ballroom at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts

Crank up the propeller and strap on your leather helmet and goggles! Wrap your silk scarf around your neck, we’re flying by the seat of our pants into the past. Fighter pursuit planes piloted by “magnificent fools” are in the sky over the Argonne.

The 2012 Denver Silent Film Festival takes flight at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) with a Gala V.I.P. Reception. With the theme of WWI aviation, the Gala will provide a rare opportunity to see the greatness of early cinema — featuring the Opening Night Film, Wings, winner of the very first Academy Award for Best Picture in 1929. Plan to join filmmakers, authors, stars, and Denver luminaries for the DSFF Gala Reception from 6:00 to 7:30 in the DCPA’s beautiful Seawell Grand Ballroom.

Upon arrival, you’ll find the Ballroom has been transformed into an WWI white and gold hangar. Epicurean Catering will serve upscale Mess Hall cuisine and beverages typical of the silent movie era. The chefs at Epicurean have even recreated a signature cocktail, French 75, just for the occasion. Word has it that there may even be sightings of “Charlie Chaplin” and “Mary Pickford” amongst the guests.

During the Gala renowned film preservationist, Serge Bromberg of Lobster Films in Paris, will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication to saving and restoring motion pictures.

1920s and aviation attire is encouraged but not required!

For tickets, please contact Montine Hansl, Executive Festival Director, at (303) 556-4797 or email montine.hansl@ucdenver.edu.
